Arau Open Debate 2009

Assalamualaikum to all,

I had a very busy week last week.Starting with my journey to Arau open, to my adventure in Perting Valley camp in Bentong.In sequence, im gonna talk bout Arau open first.It was held by UiTM Arau from 25 to 30 of May. My team from BMI (the first time BMI actually sends a team for an open debate competition..woot!!) consisted from me,Luqman and Aimi.Just something to note about, Aimi is my first female debate teammate!Clap2!Dunno y, other gurls don't seem to like being in my team tho..>.<'.We headed of on Monday morning with high spirits and determination!Our target:Win 2 out of 5 rounds. Later on it was announced that we would have 6 rounds.So we changed it to winning 3 out of 6 rounds.An average target for a team who besides me, both of the other speakers did not have University debate experience. A back-aching 8 hour ride to Arau didnt dampen our spirit much altho the jitters did eventually came in during the debaters briefing. Especially because we so clumsily expected an Asian style debate tournament and suddenly hearing it announced as an Australasian style debate tournament was a slight fright.(My mistake!)The debates started the very next day. Here's a summary of the debates:

Round 1-BMI vs UiTM Terengganu 2
'THW allow family members to sell the dead body of their kin'
Verdict:BMI
~This debate was like the organ selling debate I had before in MDO. A nice debate tho.

Round 2-KDU 1 vs BMI
'TH believes that inter-faith marriage should be permissible in Malaysia'
Verdict:BMI
~This debate wuz a very close debate to me. We had the upperhand as as muslims,we understand the necessities of non interfaith marriage for Islam in malaysia.Kinda got away with it.huhu.

Round 3-UT MARA 4 vs BMI
'THW promote transexual beauty pageants'
Verdict:UT MARA 4
~Our first loss. Note to self: 'If u wanna change the whole setup, tell ALL ur teammates before hand'>.<...we were pretty bad I guess..they were pretty good...nuff said.

Round 4-UMP 2 vs BMI
'THBT host countries should automatically qualify for the world cup'
Verdict:UMP2
~I cursed myself for not being able to win this one.Not because we shouldve won or nythin, (UMP wuz really good), but coz the motion wuz about World Cup aka football! I feel really sad as a fan.Haha!..Esp when Yunus who hates the best team in the world(glory2 man utd!) is judging.

Round 5-BMI vs USU(Universitas Sumatera Utara) 1
'THW impose a quota for women in upper management'
Verdict:BMI
~one of the heatiest debate of the prelims.It wuz basically affirmative action vs meritrocracy but we manage to salvage an advantage by saying that meritrocracy is just an idealist vision of something that is improbable to be applied in real life.Huhu...USU was really2 good.It's really nice to debate and meet u guys.=)

Round 6-UiTM Sarawak vs BMI
'THBT the don't ask don't tell policy is crucial to national security'
Verdict:BMI
~This was a really blurry debate.I have no idea wat a 'don't ask don't tell policy' is.They said its about military secrets, we said its about goverment projects information;its act a policy implemented by Bill Clinton about gays joining the army >.<' .UiTM Sarawak wuz just simply very tired that one of them act slept during my reply speech!huhu..

With 4 wins and 2 losses....Breaking 10th ranked 12th(coz UT Mara had exceeded team cap for breaking),alhamdulillah we managed to proceed to the double quarters!!

Double Quarters-BMI vs UM2
'THBT experience triumphs over qualification'
Verdict:UM2
~Man Utd lost.Deprived of sleep 4 nothing.I had to go to camp.They were good.We were bad.Nuff said.Packing balik KL!=)

We didnt stay to watch the finals as I had a camp on Saturday that I needed to attend in Pahang.It would be too energy sapping if I went back on Saturday morning and suddenly go to Pahang for the camp.So on Thursday night we went back to kl from Arau at 9 p.m and arrived the next day at 5 in the morning.One of my worst busrides ever@_@. Back to debate, Arau Open was definately a memorable experience.The food was cheap, the environment was not too bad except the blistering heat we had.(Pity the opposition having to prepare outside).As a debut for BMI debate team, alhamdulillah getting to break and be in the top 12 rankings is a great achievement.We targeted 3 wins remember?(Was called 'pathetic' by Azrul coz of this >.<')
To add things up, I recieve news from my friends that during the closing ceremony they gave prizes to the top 10 best speaker. Im not sure myself, coz I havnt seen the tabs with my very own eyes yet but alhamdulillah I was ranked 1st overall best speaker out of the 144 participants including those from IIU, UiTM TWEDS(Taiwan team), Lumps(Pakistan Team),USU(Indonesian team)!!My best achievement as a debater I guess.=D.However,im completely positively sure, that there were many greater debaters in that tournament. Allah S.W.T gave me rezeki to recieve it.Alhamdulillah.=).(But its still hard to believe untill I get my hands on the tabs..haha).My greatest appreciation and respect to both Luqman and Aimi for being great teammates, n not succumbing to all the pressure of the new world u guys just indulged in. You guys debuted in this tournament and managed to break is a totally awesome feat.Its not even a tournament like novice where u have a majority of teams with less experience joining.So u guys really shud be proud of urselves, n insyaAllah lead BMI to glory for Inter-UniKL presidents cup!hehe(other Unikl beware..kidding..=P...Still a long way to go..Mada mada dane!)To the organizers, although things were pretty much hectic, but u guys did a great job and I guess everyone was really happy to be in the tournament.Congratz guys and hopefully the next Arau open wud be as great or better than this one!=).Huhu..

~I have still stories to tell about my camp in Pahang tho.But i'll just save it for next time.Need to sleep already@_@.Huhu

~PS...Need to focus more on studies now!Exam on 29th..Less than a month!=S

Journey of champions!

Assalamualaikum,

Hye guys. Many things have happened since the last time I posted in this blog. One of them worthy of note, MANCHESTER UNITED ARE CHAMPIONS OF ENGLAND!!!!

Man United has made a record equaling 18 premiership title wins and also won the premiership titles three years in a row!It was never easy, as I quote Sir Alex, 'United's way is the hard way'.To succeed, we need lots of devotion, focus and determination which also includes a little bit of luck and most importantly faith. When we believe in something, it spurs us to do the best and elevates us to the top.Congratulations to all the players,the manager and not to forget the supporters(That includes me^^) for the fantastic achievement! Next up, we have a mouth watering clash with the other epitome of the beautiful game,the Spanish domestic champions, Barcelona for the final of the european championship!Although I do agree that Barcelona's attack are a force to be reckoned with, but the wholesomeness and depth of the united squad can overcome any obstacle!Off to Rome we go!!

Enough with football, let's get back to my surrounding reality. Within a blink of an eye we have suddenly nearly reached the middle of the year.Time seems to fly past so fast that we don't realize how we suddenly reach a certain stage in life:

It definitely struck me hard on how time just goes bye waiting for no man as I look back on how I've used the time Allah has given me, I feel ashamed of myself. There are many times where I do believe that I can use my time in a more progressive manner rather than wasting it on something unproductive. It is a plight of men that we only realize things when it is already too late to take back.Assignments, projects, training, study, are all hunting me nowadays. I always have to prioritize which one to do first and as Im no robot, I tend to be influenced and err.It is a common predecament students face.Adieh~ But there's no use crying over spilt milk is it?? InsyaAllah hopefully I an others in the same situation as me improve ourselves in the future.Lets not procrastinate, more action and less talk!..Lol..Kinda reminds me of politics.

Err..Speaking of politics, as a proud(?) Perak-ian(??), it saddens me to see how shameful the procedings of politics have gone in Perak. It's like a circus out there! A personal oppinion, I think its best for us to have fresh elections for Perak; uphold the democratic policy! Not saying that being democratic is always best(for certain examples in history), but at least we know that it is the people who are in power and not some corrupt politicians! However,considering the fact that elections consume money of the rakyat , I say, one of the side should just give up and let the winning side try to salvage their reputation during our next general election.Nuff said~=)

As the year strides to June, my busy-ness is always at its peak. Currently I have to juggle between studies, debate, fitness and a lil bit of chess. Next week insyaAllah Im going to enter Arau Open with the BMI debate team. In mid June, i'll have a inter-uniKL chess competition (which im planning of just entering with minimal amount of training due to time constraints), and there's also going to be a one day public speaking event at UiTM S. Alam a week before my finals!(gasp!).Finals??Thats the scariest part.It has been confirmed to start on the 29th of June so i've got about a month to activate this god given brain of mine.A very-very busy period indeed. InsyaAllah you can do it!!Yosh!!@_@..Fight-oh!! (>.<)'

Salam..

For many debaters, the IIU Interschool Debate Competition is the first stepping stone into the world of wit and wisdom, of style and substance; the battle of the minds. It was 5 years ago when I first came out in front with my maiden rebuttal speech (I started out as a 3rd speaker) in this tournament. It was my first tournament that I debated in, and like many other newbies, I was very nervous and it showed in my speech. Gradually, I started to get the hang of it, and found out how fun debating was. Reminiscing back my school days, it is quite an honour for me to be allowed to be an adjudicator for the 8th Interschool Debate Competition. The debate was held from 24 to 29 April at IIU Gombak. It was very intresting to see how different the intrest in debate have risen through the years. The competition this year had nearly 120 teams for the english catagory participating; a stark contrast with about only 60 teams participating during the competiton in 2004. Apart from the participation, without a doubt the level of school debaters have risen as well. I had seen several debates that impressed alot. During the prelims, I was trusted to adjudicate alone. There were several times I felt a very sudden urge to join in the debate as well. Honestly,it was kinda hard keeping a composured face in front of the school debaters. My solution to that was to only smile whenever I felt like wanting to say something.=)

Apart from adjudicating, I had also aimed to help my junior team from SDAR in the competition.
As I was adjudicating during the prelims, I couldnt do much for them. However, thankfully they broke into the double octos and I had my chance to see them debating.We were ranked 17th and had undoubtly the hardest route to the finals. However, we had a very good team consisting of Irfan the captain,Azim,Farhan, and Harris. In my oppinion, their dedication to debate is definately admirable. My team during high school can't compare to the amount of research and training that these kids had. After winning the double octo's against MRSM Balik Pulau, we were pitted against the school which ranked first during the prelims, RMC. It was the most heated high school debate I have seen. Alhamdulillah, we barely won with a margin of 0.5. When the verdict was out, I had uncontrollably jumped for joy in front of the public. I didnt care; for the first time in interschool, we managed to reach the quarterfinals. As if RMC were not tough enough, we had to meet KGV during the quarters. KGV was the school that entered MDO (The majority were university participants) and managed to break. A very formidable school indeed. The theme of the quarters was economics. For the record, a majority of debates that SDARians lose so far were topics with economic themes. This 'curse' actually started from my team in 2005.'>.< The debate was another heated one, and again alhamdulillah we managed to win with a slight margin with a 2-1 split. I was estatic. These guys didnt just broke the curse, they had managed to reach the semis! In the semis we were against Greenroad, a school from Kucing. I don't want to comment much on how it went, but the semi's were the end of the road for my junior team although in my oppinion they were definately final material.The only problem was they kinda left out some important arguments in thier substansive speech. Not to discredit greenroad though=). Reaching the semi-finals itself is a totally remarkable achievement. For that I really congratulate u guys!!My hat is off to u=).Seeing u guys, I kinda wanted to join in the fun and debate together=P. I would also like to congratulate Irfan for emulating me to be among the top10 best speakers and also for being able to lead the team superbly. Another special mention here is for Harris, who although he did not debate, stood by and contibuted to the team effortlessly. I doubt that we could have reached this far without him.
Insyallah, I pray we would go two rungs ahead in PPM and be the champions!=)...Keep up the good work guys!=)

I would also like to congratulate my friends in IIU for wonderfully organizing this competition. I say that Faiz 's proposal of the motion 'IIU Interschool Debate Competition Should Be Held Again Next Year' should stand.=P

Im NOT into you.=P

Salam...

Just yesterday, I caught a late night movie, 'He's just NOT into you'. The star-studded movie was about several people in different status of relationships and how their life went on. The theme of the movie was to portray real life situations of relationships; both the good and the bad. The movie raised questions on sincerity, trust, responsibility, love and desire. Just to clarify, the movie is from a western perspective. However, since the western culture is being absorbed more and more by our community, it doesn't surprise me that I can relate some of the movie's stories with people around in Malaysia. Throughout the movie, there are even some instances where I think I can relate it to myself albeit of course in a different manner..=P

One of the questions raised in the movie is the question of the importance of marriage.Do we really have to marry to show that we love a person? Of course, this question is only valid in the west where we have couples who live together without even getting married. So for these people, they sleep together, wash thier laundry together, some even raise kids together so where is the urgency of actually marrying our couple? What does marriage actually signifies?

From an islamic perspective, marriage is easily justified and holds a deeper meaning. In islam, marriage is even a religious duty.

The Prophet(pbuh) said , "Marriage is my tradition who so ever keeps away there from is not from amongst me"-source.

Marriage signifies a declaration of responsibility and it does not just involve just the couple, but also the families of both couple and also the community itself. Marriage is the basis of a family institiute that aims to live happily with tranquility with devotion to the al-mighty. Salam and hye all,

Recently I really had felt rather empty with no debates to look forward to. Most probably, MDO is destined to be my last debate competition in Malaysia before insyAllah furthering my studies overseas. MDO was a nice experience not just for debating, but also how I met with new people, observing stark contrasts in oppinions, ideologies, race and faith but being bonded together with a common intrest of debating.

A recap of the MDO events:For the first day, we had a win and a loss. After settling in our lodges, we went to see the MU vs Fulham match. I think this match was a turning point of how we encountered continous bad luck.Haha.First, MU and Chelsea loss(with respect to Ikram). Then, we went back to the the hotel and found our room locked. We shared room with other debaters and apparantly they were all asleep and had forgotten to unlock the door. After several attempts of trying to wake them up with no avail, we decided to sleep in the car. I parked it under the 'Taming Sari' and we slept till Subuh. Lucky for me, it was raining so I had a good sleep. Then the following morning we had our first 2 rounds with losses and one of them with some judging issues. I felt really terrible at that time. Luckily, our run of bad events ran out and we won the next two debates.
At night, it was my first time I stepped in into a nightclub (Syafiq, ur right, I had to put this in my blog...haha). With all due respect, I didn't enter voluntarily but the announcement of breaking teams was done at the night club. Frankly, I am curious of what happens at night clubs but I havnt had a chance to enter without a feeling of guilt.=P..So I did relish the chance to see what happens at night clubs. Even before I set foot in it, my ears were already blasted with the loud sound of the dance music played. As I entered, my heart was pounding non stop to the rythm of the music. It kinda felt like it wanted to explode. That was how loud the music was. Then I saw the dancing. No wonder people enjoyed going to night clubs; even looking at the dancing it felt like i'm in a careless free world with no probs to ponder. I have to admit, I felt like I wanted to dance too!=P. The bad part of nightclubs is of course the drinking and the free mixing of genders. (No offence to other religions but for a muslim, it is strictly prohibited!). After the break was announced, I chatted outside the club with other debaters, some who like me can't stand being inside the club. After a while, me and Ikram decided to hang out at McD (boycott that sadly didn't last that long for me T_T) with Syafiq (SDAR junior now CFS IIU debater), Adi(Was an Integrasi Selandar debater now UITM S.Alam debater) and Ard( A new friend that I got to know just outside the club, and turns out she lives in the same place as me..a small world indeed..UITM Lendu debater). The night was quite a memorable experience. The following morning I went back to BMI early since Ikram had to return to MICET for an interview in the evening. MDO was another great competition to be in. I am proud to be a part of it and want to thank my teammates and MICET (Miss Hayati!) for giving me this opportunity. I learned alot and realize that compared to some of my already developed peers, I still have a looong way to go in debating. Hope I can continue to debate in UK insyaAllah. Mada mada dane!

I actually thought that I would update about MDO( Malaysia Debate Open) when the tabs are out, but as it seems like its taking forever, I decided to just do it. It was organized by MMU Melaka consisting of 72 teams during 21-23 March. Unlike the novice, the pros were also participating as well.There were also some teams from other countries, notably China,Japan and some ASEAN countries. No doubt it's the one of the toughest national open debate tourneys in Malaysia. So this is how we fared:

Round 1-MICET VS MACAU2
'THBT terminally ill patients have a right to die'
This is the first time our team met with an international team.The MACAU team are from the University of Macau, China. We talked about euthanasia for this motion.It was a very,very tough debate. The adjudicator said that if they had elaborated even a lil bit on one point,they would've won.
Result:MICET

Round 2-MICET vs UKM1
'THBT criminal cases should be tried by jury'
For this round, I really want to apoligize to my teammates.I've saw this debate before(final royals 2000) and shouldve known better than to pick this motion while we are the government.
We had a very confusing proposal (I laughed myself watching me write the mechanism), and against a good team like UKM, it was futile.
Result:UKM1

Round 3-UT Mara 8 vs MICET
'This house would repeal tax exemptions on all religious institiutions'
Due to our lack of experience, we were playing with a very weak way to refute the motion; talking on issues of ethics. Since it is a very subjective matter, we ourselves were a bit confused. However, it was a fun debate.Congratz to UTM8 for reaching the semis.=)

Round 4-MACAU 2 vs MICET
'THBT we should militirize outer space'
Don't want to comment much on this one. We met MACAU2 for the second time.The debate was okay but also confusing.To my new founded friends from MACAU(if u came to stumble by this), it's great to know u guys.Thanks for the souverniers!=)

Round 5-MICET vs MMUM4
'THW allow prisoners to donate thier organs in exchange for the shortening of thier sentences.'
We had a dejavu of sorts, meeting Jevi(MMUM debater from Kazakhstan) for the second time with a topic about organ donations!(the first time was novice). It was a heated debate, but somehow we prevailed through.
Result:MICET

Round 6-UITM Pahang 6 vs MICET
'TH would tax savings during the time of economic recession'
UITM pahang was undoubtly a team who had only experienced high school debating.(Or was coached by a lecturer who only knew high school debating, I dunno). They were quite good with thier language but their points was kinda childish.Given time and experience they could develop well. Undoubtly our easiest debate of the tourney.
Result:MICET

We had 3 wins and 3 losses.Obviously not good enough to break.Since the tabs are not out, I have no idea where we rank.I'll update it later.The tourney was valuable experience, and it's always fun to hang around and meet new people. For the next post, I may want to share some stories about things that happened during the debate. But for now, I got some things to do.Ciao!

National Novice 2009 had just finished and here's a round-up how we fared...

1st round-MICET 1 vs UT Mara 1
'This house will remove race based identification in Malaysia'
The first round draw was kind of an unfortunate one.As it was the first round,we were definately not into gear and things were not made easier by pitting us against the first team of the home team(eventual vice-champs).We had a huge flaw in our mechanism leading us to our downfall.Can't help agreeing with the results.
Result:UT Mara 1

2nd round-CFS 3 vs MICET 1
'This house will allow abortion of physical deformaties'
This was a fun round.Frankly,abortion is a debate theme we knew by heart.We already had it during our training and the previous President's Cup. Coming from CFS IIU, they were good speakers with good structure but lacked in thier mechanism and arguments.
Result:MICET 1

3rd round-MICET 1 vs MMUM 4
'This house will consider lifestyle for organ recievers'
This debate was a very confusing one for me.It was a very close debate.We had alot of problems in defining 'lifestyle' but in the end it thankfully went our way.
Result:MICET 1

4th round-UKM 1 vs MICET 1
'This house believes that Chris Brown should never receive a grammy.Ever.'
Obviously a humour round.It was a pretty intresting motion, however frankly I thought that we lost this round.After three rounds,we were tired,exhausted and at one point thought about just throwing away the debate.I was'nt even taking things seriusly during my speech.I made, 'He's not a superhuman so he makes mistakes' and 'He's obviously not gonna be with you goverment!' remarks.I even thought of singing.Haha.The opposite side were taking things a bit to seriusly.I think thats y we won..kot.=P
Result:MICET1

5th round-MMUM 2 vs MICET 1
'This house will impose carbon tax on individuals'
Dejavu all over again.It's similar to the debate that BMI lost to MIAT in the quarterfinals of the Presidents Cup.The difference was that this was a bit more general, but somehow I used nearly all the same points I used against MIAT.MMUM had trouble with thier mechanism, and we managed to capatalize on it.All three of them were foriegner's and it was nice to debate with them.
Result:MICET 1

Octo-finals-IIS1 vs MICET1
'This house will teach sex education to secondary school students with or without thier parents consent'
With 4 wins,we managed to break 10th and went to the octo-finals against IIS.(BMI's neighbour..lol).Admittingly, we had a very fragile setup which i realized half-way through my speech.IIS was a very good and eloquent team.They had structure and style as well.It was my worst debate for the tourney I think.
Result:IIS 1

For 'virgins'(the term they used for novice debaters..lol),being ranked 10 out of 70 teams is a good feat.For individual result alhamdulillah I was ranked 7th.For that,I thank my teammates, Ikram and Hazee for being such wonderful comrades in battle.It wudnt be as fun if it werent for u guys.Hope we can work together again in the future.=) I would also like to thank Miss Hayati and the whole MICET debate team so much for giving me the chance to tag along.I owe u guys alot.U guys are superb, and with that spirit im sure u guys wud go far in debating. I would also want to congratulate Uitm a job well done especially because organizing a debate tourney with 70 teams is very hard to do.Hope u wud continue to do so in the future.and to all the adjudicators and friends I met during the tournament, I hope we'll all meet again in the future and its nice to get to know u guys.Finally,Monash won the cup in the finals against UTM 1.I didnt stay to watch it tho.After loosing the octo's we went out and played bowling.^_^

p.s->I dont remember all the exact motions,but its nearly just about the same.

Salam and a warm greeting to all readers,

Something I really miss about being a kid was the fact that I could just move on with the flow.Ur parents,teachers and friends cater for u,n u just need to go with the flow of things.The important choices at that time were trivial compared to what we face now in the step to adulthood.It's not rocket science(sorry,terpengaruh>.<) that the older u grow the more responsibilities and choices u have to face.Unless we're like Benjamin Button,we just need to face the fact. Lately, ive been constantly reminded that im at the brink of 21;the so-called official age of adulthood most importantly recognized as the age where u get to vote. I have no idea y, but people around me are very age concious...Yela2,everybody is my little-la sangat sibling=P.
Most probably,those around my age would most certainly think about thier education,job prospects,marriage prospects and so on.Some are so into it that they don't even realize that they have left thier childhood life altogether;not saying that its a bad thing,but its rather scary to suddenly realize uve become someone that the little you didnt even thought about becoming.This does not imply to everyone of course,but basicly when it does happen,u start to think about all the turning points in ur life that made the present u.

Enough of the deep me-being-complicated stuff lets go to updates.Ive finally finished my 3 week period exams last week.All that I can do now for the exams is tawakkal,pray,and redha...For the holidays,Ive kept myself busy with debate.Im going to join the national novice competition together with Ikram and Hazee both from micet.Im really looking forward to it and if anyone wants to come and have a look ,its on 7 march at uitm shah alam. Admittingly, I still have lots of training to do. Hopefully I can go a level higher than I was during the presidents cup. Hope to meet lots of new people too and make new friends. Since most of my college friends are safe and sound down under and other places, its getting to get pretty lonely here in Malaysia ;P.

Chess Principle's In Life April 14 2006

Its intresting how the flow of life would sometimes bring you to a point when you would simply look back and laugh on what you did before or even sometimes be puzzled on what and why things happen that made you do our react to those things.Well,recently Ive been studying chess games and theory using the chessmaster 10th edition programme I bought right after the national age group championship.After my lost at that tournament,I had wanted to further strengthen my play by buying the programme.After going through a couple of tutorials written by american grandmaster, Josh Waitzkin,his approach in chess amazed me through his grasp of knowledge about the game(or the black and white jungle as he calls it) and his idea of connecting real life situations with the basic principles of chess.The GM is well known for his affiliations in the chess world and martial arts and it dazzle’s me on how precise some of his chess principle’s could be used into life as well.Well, there’s this one principle,when you gain an advantage over your opponents pieces,your maybe up in material,having a piece or two,when suddenly you accidently blunder your game and your advantage you were having is lost.However,your position is still completely fine,but its just the mere thought that you once had an advantage is difficult for you to comprehend and blocks your thoughts in making the right decisions for your next moves.You are actually falling in a downward spiral of emotion that causes you to loose your way to succeed in the game.However,the simple thing to do is to just actually return to the position you are having,return to the surface of your thoughts,and solve the position without being engrossed in the thought that you once held an advantage.So how does this link to life?Well,the advantages that are gained are the good times in your life,you won a tournament,you scored straight a’s for exams,you get hope in obtaining something you want but suddenly,things take a twist,you loose disgracefully in the next tournament,you dont meet some people’s expectations,you are afraid thinking bout scholarships and stuff,you happen to feel things that you dont want to feel,you start thinking bout things that you wanted but you know you cant obtain and then you start to become binded by the thought that from a happy state,and suddenly your life turns into turmoil,and due to your reluctant manner to face the current scene but think of your past gains or status,then your going to make the next wrong step,and the next one after that too,if u dont return and focus your mind to the surface(in other words..snap out of it!) and face your problems as it is.FACE YOUR PROBLEMS AS IT IS NOW AND DONT THINK ABOUT THE PASS EARNINGS.Another thing I learn from chess is that sometimes all your knowledge about a principle would not apply for every situation.It should adapt and change in its own way according not to what the basic principle’s tell you,but to what the position demanded.For example,a key thing in chess is development,but while your piece is being attacked, should you really try to develop and not try to hinder or guard the piece that is bieng attacked?So in a way,we have to act based on what the situation demanded in life.Know your priorities.Understand the status quo.So sometimes when its actually a good thing to help other people out like wanting to help your school debate team debate in the next competition(which Im LONGINGto do),but due to the possibilities of gaining a scholarship interview thus its better to sit at home, which would simplify things in case of the oppurtunity.Although it is against your own will and nature,but because its what the current situation DEMANDED, then its a better thing to do.So basically,a rule of chess turns into,KNOW YOUR PRIORITIES.Know what is the best thing to do.There are actually lots of other principle’s that I can discuss but that would take ages….Hehe,hrmm..why am I writing this??Well,for one thing,we all face problems in life and this is a way for me to let it out.Secondly, is to show how intresting a simple game of chess could convey an idea that I could adapt in life.Hehe..so people,dont ask me why im so crazy bout the game coz u knoe wut?The game represents my life..=P~chess freak~

I just wanna wish to all my friends form naga kms 7 all the best and gud luck in Aussie/NZ and for any of ur future undertakings.Im gonna miss seeing u guys.I really am dissapointed that I can't follow u guys to down under but hopefully, insyallah murah rezeki we'll meet each other again.=)

My autumn semester final exam is juz around the corner.Starting 10th of Feb to be exact.So to my kms buddies->Im sorry I can't send u guys to the airport(Macam ade je yang nak ak pergi=P..lol) but my prayers are with u guys.

Honestly, I still have alot to revise, im not sure im even 25% ready.Which means that I need to concentrate more on studying which also means that I wont have a new post for a long long time.My final exam is for 3 weeks with 5 papers.(yeah,there is a large gap between papers,alhamdulillah).Hopefully this cud increase my focus of studying.

I know that a mojority of blogs would certainly point out the highlights of this year.From the Malaysian general elections,beijing olympics,euro2008,America's presidential elections,the economic crisis,recent bombings in gaza,and landslides are just a few.What is certain though,this year has had its up's and down's with the down's dominating the events.Needless to say,following the economic crisis,2009 is expected to be a year of turbulence as well.Furthermore, in 2009 all eyes will be on Obama and how he manages things after he takes seat in the white house.America is certainly facing hard times now,but most importantly to me is what his foriegn policy would be.Although im sure that he would still have to support Israel,but after the gaza bombings let's all pray to Allah that at least he should stop the killings and find a way to bring peace to the middle east without using his army.

On a personal note,2008 has regrettably been the worst year of my entire life and this is no mere exaggaration.There are parts of it that I truly dont want to look back at.Although I do need to remind myself once in a while as they are truly huge lesson's in my life.I still remember the quote in our F5 history textbook,'Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it'.

All the heartbreaks of 2008,hopefuly I cud put all of it aside.'It does not matter that u fall,but how u stand back up again is more important'.

Sore feet

Yesterday, I went to Lala's 'kenduri kesyukuran' together with Ikram.We met chill at the lrt and then went there together.Later,Alyaa,Masyi and Kreuk also came.Frankly speaking, the kenduri was slightly different then the usual kenduri that I had imagined.So I was really2 'segan'.Haha.However, I wanna thank Lala for the nice food and hospitality.Hope u'd do fine for ur summer school and tesl studies overseas insyallah.(Honestly, I dunno y u and Ikram call each other chickens..I hav gud thoughts and bad thoughts...either of u wanna clarify?=P ).

After the kenduri,me and Ikram decided to watch the prelims of the World University Peace Invitational Debate(WUPID) at UniKL MIIT.We were there really late and just managed to see a glimpse of the last round of that day.I gotta admit, they aren't called international debaters for nothing. They have the clarity and the wits to take over any opponents.Wish I cud be one of em sumday.In sheffield maybe?=)

After the brief visit to WUPID,we went to Sunway Sports Planet for my small merantianz 015 reunion.Met my old school mates whom alot of em I havnt met in years or months.I really enjoyed playing futsal with them;reminds me of the gud old days.Sometime's I really2 do miss my life in sdar.Not just the school,but more importantly my friends,some of the teachers and how it was like to be a highschool student.I have to admit,not playing futsal for a while really puts strain on my feet.Went back home last night with a very sore ankle.

Unconveniently enuff,this morning I had promised to go for ice skating at Sunway Pyramid with Fafa.Me and Ikram went there and met Fafa,Hotstuff,Lala,Dan,Ben,Dwane,Masyi, and Ema.I had really2 looked forward to it,although I wished my ankle was in a better condition.Albiet the pain,the ice skating was actually fun.But the bad thing is I still dunno how to properly skate.Anybody can teach me?I'll treat u to the big Carls Jr Chili burger..lol.Owh, and I pity the guy who I accidently tripped.If by any coincidence u'll read the this blog,I sincerely apoligize for making u fall.=S...Hehe.

So after going all about for the past few days,now im finally sitting down at home with badly sore ankles and a sprained thigh I think.Haha...but dunt get me wrong..it wuz all worth it.=D

The end of the deb8 tourney

After 3 days of a battle of words of wits, finally the first Inter-UniKL Presidents Cup came to an end. Congratulations to the team of MIAT(Malaysian Institiution of Aviation Technology) team 2 for winning the cup.Congratulations also to IPROM who were the second finalist,and also to MIMET for getting joint 3rd with us.Congratulations also to all the best speakers of the tournament especially my goodmate Ikram.(A proof that kms got talent and that VICE or VOICE couldve really worked out..lol..next open tournament,me,u...and jamil?=P)

To my teammates,Bro Nazli and Usopp my hat is off to u guys for making it to the semi's although it's just your first time debating and also getting the highest ranked team and score during the preliminary rounds.To Bro Anuar,'kak'Ain=P,Kak Su and the 'bidan terjun' debater Aidil,I really appreciate u guys for all ur help.Although we didn't achieve our ultimate goal,it was a blast having u guys as teammates and I hope that in the future you would continue to be in debate.Sorry for all the mistakes I have done and thanks for being wonderful mates.One team one sound!=).I would also like to thank Bro Azrul for guiding us.If it werent for u,the semi's would not have even been able to be within our reach.However, im sorry to disappoint in this tournament but insyallah in the future I wud try and utilize the skills u taught us and show that ur guidence werent for naught.

To all the other debaters,it was fun having u guys in BMI.Im really glad I get to know u guys from all the different institiutions of UniKL.Everyone is superb.To those who came here and didnt get prizes,please be proud of yourselves for being able to be among the selected few who has the guts and the wits to debate.As this is the first debate tournament for most of us,let it be a valuable experience and hopefully we'll meet each other again in the future.

The adjudicator's has spoken,and the verdict has been given out.It really does seem to me that I still have lots of work to do if I really wanna win debates.Although I did give it my best,Im not satisfied with what I have done.Sadly,I would not be in the competition again next year.Hopefully before that I cud redeem myself in other debate competitions.However, to be fair,I am really2 thankful to Allah coz after my high school debating err...'career' I never thought I'd start debating again.'Every cloud has a silver lining'...huhu..

Its been a tiring week.But im satisfied.=)

Knowing that I have actually done something meaningful in a day actually makes me happy.It's far better than having holiday's with nothing to do.Im sure my college friends would agree with me.Kan3?=P(Dunt be angry coz im rubbing it in on u guys..muahahahaha)

Being bz also means I dunt have to have stupid thoughts in my head.U knoe how it's dangerous when ur all alone too much,u'd wind up thinking about unnecessary things.Well,..at least for me it is.And im sure it's not just me,there was this friend of mine who told me that he intentionally wanted to make himself bz to stop thinking stupid stuff.And I think it turned out well I think=).

So guy's..the conclusion is, the next time ur so worked up in work and wished u had a holiday,remember that being bz too,ain't that bad.=)..

Its been a week since debate training started.Unlike the other debate guys, I still have classes to attend to coz the semester of my programme is different from the other bmi students meaning classes till December. Alhamdulillah so far its not been much of a problem balancing between my studies and debate training altho I hav to admit that it's a bit tiring.Im glad that gradually the performance of the team is increasing altho frankly we still got lot's of work to be done to win the competition.The only drawback of our training is the support given by BMI.Normally, being the host of the competition should mean increased support. Awkwardly what happens in BMI is kinda like the opposite.Sometime's I cud feel as if we're actually the away team to come to BMI.

First of all,joining the debate team is totally voluntarily.Our only attraction is to learn the debating skills and the glory of winning the competition.Naturally,being the host team,there should be some sort of incentives for the students to join ryte?At the very least they should help ease the burden of the debaters by giving them allowance for food and to buy debating stuff.However what happens is the debaters need to fork out their own money for these purpose!To put matters worst,there has also been incidents where the BMI lecturer's themselves undermine the team by making it difficult for us to continue training.How can they expect us to win???My fellow debaters plea is totally understandable.They are voluntarily doing something for BMI and least it it shud give the support needed.I really respect the dedication given by them right now albiet I wud not be surprised if they quit if the problem continues.I hope u guys wud stay strong and insyallah things wud be better after this.=)

Enough of the rant.On a lighter note of things,the EPL season 2008/2009 is starting to heat up.Strangely, 3 of the so called 'Big 4' all had 0-0 draws last night.Arsenal were the only one to get a humilliating 3-0 (cudve been 4-0 if Robinho's goal was allowed) defeat to Man City.Perhaps this is a sign of change in the big 4??.Next week's fixture would be an intresting one;Arsenal Vs Chelsea...Man U vs Man City.Hopefully the gunners cud clinch an unlikely win at Stamford Bridge and Man U winning against theyre local rivals Man City.Glory2 Man United!=)

After 3 long years i'm finally returning back to debating arena.During my time in KMSI had really missed it so much.It is the place for me where I truly feel confident in myself.It's a total coincidence that not long after I had just entered BMI-UniKL,I read a notice on the signboard looking for debaters for the first InterUniKL Debate Competitionnamed as the UniKL President's Cup. The competition is held on 1o-12 Dec between 10 UniKL branches with eachcampus sending a minimum of 1 team and a max of 4 teams.The competition is timely,as I do need that extra bit of self confidence after recent turn of events.

To tell u the truth,I hav gone through a year where I oftenly am in a downhearted mood.For those who are not close to me might not have noticed but to those who are,im sorry its kinda obvious.Im really sorry to all my friends who unintentionally 'kena tempias' of my 'downness'. I wanna thank you guys for cheering me up and im really lucky to have u guys as friends.You know who u are right?=)

Nways,after a horrible start(and middle) of a year,it would be a nice surprise if I had something to cheer about at the end of 2008.Hopefully, I can put some oil into the rusty debate part of my brain n get it working again.Seriusly,I feel really2 rusty.I couldn't even understand what I was blabbering about during our first mock debate: 'A child without a head,legs,and arms is still living'...wth?? However,it's kinda nice to know that im being trained by one of the best (the benefit of having uia juz kat sebelah..hehe=P).Hopefully with their experience by our side we cud win the elusive cup.

Let's face it, how many of u out there have googled their own name? I just watched 'The suite life of zack and cody' (yeah,Disney,I know=P ) and there was this scene where Cody googled London's name on the web to find out how popular she wuz.Out of pure curiosity,I decided to give it a try.So I went online and googled 'Ammar Ehsan'.There were 30000 hits with of course a large majority of it not even concerning me.I went through the list and learnt that most of site's mentioning my name were chess sites stating results of tournaments that I joined or blogs from my friends and relatives.However,out of all the sites,there was one blog that caught my eye:Tip Peperiksaan.

Lol.While reading it,I was both flattered and amused for being mentioned about sumthing 5 years in the past.Time has flown so fast that without realizing it,im already 20!Honestly,when I watch Djokovic or Jo Wilfred Tsonga playing tennis,Walcott playing football,or even actors like Selena Gomez,Horikita Maki,Hayden Panitierre and many more, I just can't believe that these people are younger or about the same age as me.I still feel like it was just yesterday that I was this boy who knew nothing much about the world,naive and gullible with a high sense of youthful optimism.Now,im this guy facing the realities of the world where everything is not as easy as it seems.Waaaaaa...kinda wish that I wuz a kid again!+)

It's been a couple of weeks already since ive entered BMI.For those who do not know,BMI does stand for 'body mass index'.It's to measure body fat based on hieght and wieght.Click here to check your BMI online=P.BMI also stands for 'British Malaysian Institiution' a part of the Universiti Kuala Lumpur(UniKL) branch that's located in Gombak, adjacent of IIU(International Islamic University-UIA).

Here,I am fortunate enough to be offered a transfer degree course aka twinning in Electrical Engineering. The unique thing about this program is that the batch (secondbatch UniKL-Sheffield) consists of only one class with 16 students.Apart from that,the 16 students vary by background and age.The oldest student is 22 and the youngest is 19.4 of us are from A-Level at KMS,6 are from Diploma at UniKL,5 are from FET(Foundation in Engineering Technology) at KMKulim and 1 is from IB KMB.Initially, our 'colourful' backgrounds isolate groups from one another.However, we blended really well once we got to know each other .Incidently,due to our different backgrounds,all of us have our own strength's and weaknesses.For the A-level and IB's,we lack the basic knowledge of engineering.I was very embarrased not to even know basic circuit calculations,the different type of electronic devices, and how to even make a circuit out of a breadboard!It is shocking to know how basic the physics learnt in SPM and A-Level's were, compared to the degree syllabus~(Terasa sangat noob)~On the first day of class I was shown a book that was twice the thickness of Briggs A-Level chemistry book which is arguably the thickest book used in A-Levels!!Fortunately,im very grateful that I have classmates that unhesitantly had helped me and the other A-level and IB students to catch up with things.Seriusly,if not for them, I would not understand a thing in class.@___@ .Thanks guys!I appreciate it.Maybe in my next post i'll introduce them.

The facilities here are not bad.Well,compared to KMS of course one is to expect better facilities.The good thing about BMI is that many facilities such as computer labs,the practical labs are actually sponsored by British based companies such as Standard Chartered and the British High Comission.I was a bit surprised to see that half of the computers at the E-learning centre are Mac's!Hehe!During my first coursework class,I was already introduced to equipments that I havn't even heard before.Kimie my classmate pointed out that it was actually a very basic equipment to have for an electronics lab.The 'thing' was called a 'Training System'.I played around with the thing like a baby trying to see how a toy works.

The hostel room (Yes,I still am living in a hostel!) is a bit bigger than KMS with 4 person in each room.The water here is freezing cold and I often end up being very reluctant in taking shower's in the morning.One intresting thing to know, the students in BMI have to actually compete with each other if they want to rent living in the hostel.They need to attend college activities such as sport events or talks and ceramah to get 'Hostel Tickets'.Only those with an adequate amount of these tickets gets to stay in the hostel.Apparently though, for the twinning program,we are already assured of a place in the hostel.

After 3 years of playing half court basketball,I finally played full court!Other sports facilities include a field,futsal,volleyball,badminton, and netball courts.There's actually a place for petanque as well,but apparently nobody's playing when its covered in moss.

The downside of BMI is, that it is has the most 'skema' set of rules of all UniKL!Unlike iprom and micet(two other UniKL subsideries), we still have to wear long sleeve and slack attire to class.To make things worse,our curfew starts at 11p.m!!The rules are pretty tight here,with unabiding students having to play fines if caught. Looking on the positive side, i've endured hostel rules for more than 7 years already so a year wouldn't be much of a difference.

Second chances don't come often in life.Hopefully this will not be another opportunity wasted.No-I will not make it a waste!->You can do it if u try hard and believe in urself Ammar!Insyallah,if u try hard,ur efforts wont come to waste!The time is now.The scene has been set out for you.Pull yourself together!Don't let unecessary thoughts confine you.Forget the past and live for the future!The wieght of the world is set upon ur shoulders!Focus!Aim for the best!You can do it insyallah!!

Ive been thinking alot lately about my direction in life.There was once upon a time that I actually did have a concrete plan in mind.However, many turns of events made it impossible now.

'Kita hanya boleh merancang,Allah yang menentukan segalanya'.

The normal interview question;'In 10 years,how do you picture yourself?'.To be honest,I frankly don't know. Currently,im studying to become an electrical engineer.I have to admit that it wasn't my initial choice of engineering course,but then again,im thankful enough for the opportunity given.From the way it is now,it really doesn't seem to me like im gonna be a technical engineer.I dont think it suits me very well.My current plan is to take up an MBA after my degree.But even that is not a certainty.
Having too many choices and not having choices can really frustrate u.Sometimes I feel really empty inside,like a robot,mechanically living through each day.Self evidently enough,thinking back,I didnt have to do much decision making.I was too used to just go with the flow.For instance,after I got straight A's in upsr I didnt even care much if im going to boarding school or not.My parents told me to go and I just happily followed so(It was a good move nway).Then came after SPM,was the first time I actually should have made the decision.But I really didnt put much thought into it,and I just wanted to go with the flow;so I took up engineering.(Besides medic,this is the professional job most taken up by people).Which leaves me with where I am now today.I definately am not regretting it,but what scares me is the choices I need to make in the future.
Frankly,it's not about academic and profession only,everything in life that comes to mind need the adequate amount of planning.I often like to view life as a serius game of chess.In this black and white jungle,those who do not know what they are doing will fail and those who do will prevail.

Hana Yori Dango Review

For those who may not know,im an avid follower of japanese drama and anime.Some of my college mates even called me 'otaku '(As in some kind of japanese geek) . So when I knew that the finale of the hit japanese drama series 'Hana Yori Dango' (Boys over flower) was being played in Malaysian cinema, I was elated. I still remember during my period doing Cambridge A-Levels at KMS,how me and my closests friends;Aizat,Ben,and Ikram was so into it that we even decided to role-play the F4 during our graduation dinner.Although it didnt quite happen, due to obvious budget constraints(heck,they are damn RICH characters),but we still had fun in 'poyo-poyoing' like them.In case anyone ponders, my character is the cool and quiet Hanazawa Rui!=P

The story starts right after the second season of HYD where the couple of Domyouji Tsukasa and Makino Tsukushi face one of thier final obstacles to be together.Marriage!The theme of the story is based on whether or not the guy/girl u wish to marry is really the right one for u?Can u accept all his weaknesses after marriage and are u willing to go through rain and shine with him/her?To answer these questions,Makino and Domyouji set out on a quest to find a stolen tiara called 'The Smile Of Venus';a heirloom of the Tsukasa.If the hierloom is not found,it would bring chaos to the Tsukasa family and permit the couple from marrying.

Overall,the movie serves as a good ending to the drama.It maintains the sarcastic and cool humour with it's own set of pleasent suprises that fans would adore so much.Although in the middle there is a part where the background of the story becomes rather monotonous and the storyline is at times too irrational,however it is still entirely enjoyable to watch.I particularly like the OST in the movie;Kiss Hug by Aiko,and One Love by Arashi.Overall rating of 4/5.

Change-Rhetorical or dream come true?

Change.A word that recently so heavily inspired the world.The victory of Barrack Obama is one story,how he did it is an epic.Being born in the states, I funnily found myself being attracted to america's presidency elections more than the elections at home.Honestly, in some sense,I kinda wished that I could vote there instead of here in Malaysia.Comparing with the democratic process of america, it is obviously evident that our beloved country has still got a long way to go.

Finally, the man has done it.After gruesome months of campaigning against democratic rival ex-first lady Hilarry Clinton, then against John McCain his republican rival,america has seen a success story like no other.He has become a symbol of equality among races being the first african-american to ever take the president seat.If u read the newspapers, there are hundreds of different expectations from the new pres-elect.But one thing for certain is that it would'nt be smooth sailing for obama after this.He has promised change,and change is what has to be done.In my personal oppinion,what made him a favourite was his policy being different than his predecessors.He gave the people of america hope and paved a new way of how things are being done.
Now,the only question remains is what the change is going to be.
'Orang yang hari ini lebih baik dari semalam tergolong dalam orang yang beruntung,dan orang yang hari ini sama dengan semalam merupakan orang yang rugi,dan orang yang hari ini lebih teruk dari semalam tergolong dalam golongan yang celaka'.

Hopefully,the change would come and benefit all especially war stricken countries that consist mainly of islamic countries.Obama has broken the barrier between the black and the white,unequivocally ending the spat of aperthied.So perhaps,just perhaps,one day we would see a muslim taking charge of the white house?Never stop dreaming.=)

Blogging...again..

It's been months since the last time I wrote in a blog. Frankly, when I first started with my first blogspot blog(my first was a friendster blog) , I was already ready to give up because I suddenly felt like my life's not intresting enough for anyone to read. I'd rather read other people's blog than doing one of my own.

However it suddenly came to me, its not wrong for u to have a blog that no one reads, as long as u satisfy urself in doing it. The purpose of blogging for me is just a place for me to write about.Be it my feelings,rants,oppinions, it dusnt matter.I just wanna cram everything here. Thats y I wanted to give blogging a fresh new start.And since insyallah im going overseas,this cud easily be a platform for me to improve my writing.But dunt expect me to x write in shortform coz its one heck of a task to be so schema writing a personal blog.

I guess thats about it for intro's.Owh,and the usual stuff->Everything that I write in this blog is just an oppinion. If I contradict with any of ur oppinions feel free to comment. I do like to see things in different perspectives.=)
